Stip

A time management app for art students.

A time management app for art students.

THE MISSION

Stip, short for stipulation, is an app designed to help students bargain with time. By investigating the most prominent difficulties faced by art students in particular, Stip aims to provide its user with an intuitive interface that assists in the balancing of our day-to-day tasks, as well as management of our long term goals.

Product of the collaborative efforts amongst one powerful design trio including Mariana SilvaNicole Thiel, as well as myself, Stip is an app designed in the thick of our art school experience, for sufferers alike to whom we may apply some constructive ease to future burdens.

THE PROCESS

Our design team in the early stages of development for the creation of a time management app directed towards art students. We are featured here outlining the obstacles, and studying frameworks of our context and competition.

SKETCHING AND THINKING

MAKING AND MOVING

THE CREW

Mariana came to the Stip team with an insatiable flair for the bold and colorful. Always moving in miraculous ways, with the experimental drive and technical finesse of a designer dedicated and curious at heart. Her tremendous output, most notably in the form of her spirited sketches and doodles, provided a renewed energy to our collaborative efforts at every juncture.

Don't let the vibrancy of her hair fool you, this girl is one focused, productive, and priority-driven fiend. An avid researcher and efficient worker, Nicole was the human model for our time management aspirations. With her background in long-form editing, her expertise was put to work in system design, ensuring thoroughness and consistency in all facets of functionality and appearence.

This is me. I came into the project with the role of scribe, projecting a heady obsession with mind-mapping and a blossoming interest in user experience design. Compelled by this new dimension of my field, phases of research and prototyping gave way to new and interesting modes of process in my design practice.

THE LOGO

Coming to the word mark with the concepts of stipulation, bargaining, and the weight of managing one's time, we began toying with the "st" ligature, utilizing the idea of a tipping scale. Commissioning the help of Mark Jamra, world renowned typist and resident expert on tricky letterforms, we discussed the merits and pitfalls of our initial considerations, and moved forward with a working sketch for the logo.

THE PALETTE

In the end, we all came together each with strong and similar palettes, though visibly tailored to our individual sensibilities. We worked briefly to narrow down from each of our sets, and discuss the utility of certain hues over others. Finally, we began assembling a final five-color palette, and turned the work of curating specific tints and shades to Mariana, whose expertise frequently outranks competitors in the stratum of color deployment.
